Women need more sleep because their brains work more

A recent study by researchers at Duke University indicates that the consequences of lack of sleep would be greater for women than for men. In addition to encouraging half of the population to sleep more, the results of this research also seek to promote new health advice for women who are at increased risk of heart disease, depression and psychological problems.

Psychologist and Sleep Specialist Michael Breus conducted the study which sought to estimate the respective needs of men and women in sleep by assessing their ability to cope with lack of rest. Experience has shown a considerable difference between the sexes. “We noticed that women suffered more depression, anger, and were hostile to waking up,” said Breus.

Although there is enough evidence to indicate that this disproportion is due to many biological factors, some experts consider that the expenditure of mental energy is the main cause. Women would use their brains more than men.

“One of the main functions of sleep is to allow the brain to recover and repair itself. During deep sleep, the cortex – the part of the brain responsible for thought, memory, language, etc. – detaches itself from the senses and goes into recovery mode. The more you use your brain during the day, the more this one needs to recover and the more you need to sleep. Women tend to be multi-task, do a lot of things at once. They use their brains more than men, “said Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University in England, for The Australian.

Which is to say that some men would also need more sleep if they use their brain a lot during the day. “A man who has a complicated job, has to make important decisions and solve problems, so he needs to sleep more than average men – but certainly not as much as a woman,” Horne said.

The Science of Sleep

This study led by Breus and colleagues has initiated a number of scientific studies in the study of the effects of sleep deprivation on health. Scientists at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have discovered a link between lack of rest and accelerated aging of the skin.

Other studies have associated poor sleep habits with a high risk of mental problems, heart disease, blood clots and stroke.
