This Detroit neighborhood is now America’s first 100% Organic and Autonomous District

This farming district concept is not new. The Urban Land Institute estimated that about 200 farm neighborhoods had been or were under construction across the United States, but this farm district is unique because it is the first truly urban farming district. It plans to operate in a sustainable manner and is more accessible than most other farming areas.

Agricultural neighborhoods, also known as agritopias or community-supported development, are an exciting concept because they create a remarkable improvement in the dominant food system.

They help fight against food insecurity and other community problems. They make it easier for people in low-income communities to access healthy, fresh food.

All about the first sustainable urban agricultural district

The first sustainable urban neighborhood, which recently debuted in Detroit, is the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative, a non-profit organization that aims to empower urban communities with sustainable agriculture.

New means of combating demographic desertification, this hectare of urban gardens, contains, among others, an orchard of 200 fruit trees, and more than 300 varieties of organic vegetables.

The non-profit organization is also working on other projects that go beyond agriculture, including:

Transform a long vacant building into a community resource center, which will offer educational programs, event and rendezvous locations for the neighborhood, a non-profit incubator and two commercial kitchens.
