Things you probably do not know about turmeric!

Turmeric is a powerful plant that has been used since ancient times as a spice and to treat and prevent health problems. The most important active ingredients of turmeric are curcumin and its derivatives (demethoxycurcumin, 5′-methoxycurcumin, dihydrocurcumin, etc.). It has been proven that curcumin has a beneficial effect on patients with chronic diseases including neurological, autoimmune, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The only problem is the low bioavailability of turmeric curcumin; the researchers found that curcumin is very poorly absorbed by the intestines, is poorly distributed in the body, and has a slow metabolism. To overcome the problem, scientists have developed methods for the extraction of curcumin from turmeric. It can be presented orally in various pharmaceutical formulations that increase its bioavailability, and different studies have used different doses, from 90 mg up to 6 g.

Mixtures that need to be made for better absorption of turmeric

Black pepper is the ingredient most commonly used in cooking to promote the absorption of curcumin from turmeric. You can also use the combination of turmeric with different oils because curcumin is known to be a fat soluble substance. Some colorful vegetables and fruits, such as red grapes, berries, lemons and onions contain a pigment called quercetin, which also helps in the absorption of curcumin. Recipes with turmeric should contain some of these foods to improve its bioavailability.

Recipe example

You can make a good refreshing and healthy drink by using it with other ingredients to increase its absorption. Put the turmeric in a cup of hot water and add a little lemon juice and honey to calm the pain. Mix and the drink is ready!
