A few weeks after Tesla founder Elon Musk and Governor Ricardo Rossello spoke about the tech company helping Puerto Rico, Tesla announces it has restored electricity to a children’s hospital using solar power and batteries. .
Tesla has used its solar panels and batteries to restore reliable electricity to the San Juan del Niño hospital, which company founder Elon Musk calls “the first of many Tesla solar projects underway in Puerto Rico” .
The project was born after Puerto Rico was hit by two devastating and powerful hurricanes in September, and Musk reached out to help Tesla.
The Musk company announced that it had managed to restore power to the hospital less than three weeks after Puerto Rican governor Ricardo Rossello tweeted on Oct. 6: “Great initial conversation with @elonmusk this evening.
Tesla’s image of the project’s solar panels, in a car park near the hospital, has been loved more than 84,000 times since it was posted on Instagram on Tuesday.
The new hospital system allows him to generate all the energy he needs, according to El Nuevo Dia. There are 35 permanent residents with chronic diseases; it also provides services to some 3,000 young patients, according to the newspaper. As for who pays for the electrical system, the director of the hospital told Nuevo Dia that for now, it is a donation, and that after the end of the energy crisis, an agreement could make it permanent.

Rossello and the tech company tweeted about the project this week, with Tesla saying in a post, “Grateful for supporting Puerto Rico’s recovery with @ricardorossello” – and Rossello declaring, “A major contribution from @Tesla to the Hospital del Niño. “
The news of restoring permanent energy to the hospital comes as millions of people in Puerto Rico continue to rely on electric generators. Wednesday morning, the Electric Power Authority announced that its electricity service was insured at 25%.
The task of rebuilding the Puerto Rico power grid is expected to take months and cost up to $ 5 billion.

Last week, the territory’s energy and electricity department signed a $ 300 million contract with Whitefish, a small, relatively young Montana company, to restore the grid.
Tesla is not the only tech company trying to help Puerto Rico. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has been deploying balloons from its Project Loon to the territory, helping parts of the island reconnect after most of its phone system has been destroyed.
