Paracetamol its dangerous side effects pointed by a study Remedies of the daily ills, Doliprane, Efferalgan or Dafalgan would be, in the long term, harmful to health. This is the result observed by British researchers who have just published their study in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

If one already knew the toxicity of the molecule which, ingested at high dose, was bad for the liver, for the first time, the researchers point out the side effects of the substance. Taking paracetamol would increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by 20%, including heart attacks and strokes. In addition, scientists also report a higher risk of ulcers.

And it is on the overconsumption that the researchers who draw, moreover, sound the alarm: people who consume daily and high dose of paracetamol (3 tablets of Doliprane 1000 per day, or 6 of Efferalgan 500 for example) for a prolonged period are exposed to more risk. On the basis of eight existing studies, the experts have thus shown an increased mortality rate of up to 63% in patients who consume these important doses repeatedly.

The risk of developing gastrointestinal and renal problems is also increased in case of regular consumption. For kidney problems, the risk would be multiplied by two in case of cumulative intake of more than 500g of paracetamol in the course of life.

Underestimated risks

Researchers led by Professor Philip Conaghan of the Leeds British Hospital admit that the risks mentioned remain low in absolute terms but believe that their study shows “that the real risk of paracetamol is higher than what the community currently thinks medical “.

“Given its important use and the fact that it is available without a prescription, it seems justified to make a systematic review of its effectiveness and its tolerance in particular pathologies,” they conclude.
