It was to be set up and operational in 2020. The ocean cleanup program “Ocean Cleanup” should finally be launched in the next twelve months, in favor of a technological improvement, announced its creator, Boyan Slat.
The project is to use marine currents to collect more than 5 billion plastic waste from human consumption in the seas and oceans. A true poison for marine animals such as whales, turtles and dolphins, which entangle, choke and die, while turtles eat the plastic bags they take for jellyfish.
The ocean clean-up program will be launched in the next twelve months video:
More than thirty barriers over a length of one to two kilometers
At the beginning of the project, the young Dutch had planned to set up a 100 km barrier in the shape of a “V”, attach it to the seabed and equip it with a net that sinks into the water to collect the waste. plastics.
But the initial plan was revised because engineers working with Boyan, instead of a single barrier, expect the establishment of “a fleet of several small systems”, more than thirty barriers of a length of one and two kilometers.
Within 5 years, he plans to clean up the big plate of Pacific waste
This redesigned system will be more cost-effective and more efficient, Boyan explained during a presentation in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Ocean Pollution Control Program to launch in the next twelve months
In five years, he hopes to clean 50% of the large plate of waste Pacific, against 42% in ten years as originally planned program.
