Drinking light drinks instead of those stuffed with sugars would not be beneficial in terms of the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In fact, whether the beverages are light or not, the probability of the appearance of the disease is doubled. in people consuming more than two cans daily.
This is the result and the conclusion formulated by Swedish researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, whose study was published in the European Journal of Endocrinology. To reach this conclusion, they observed the consumption and health status of 2,800 people, average age 68, sugar drinkers and, for some only, diabetics.
The sweeteners of light drinks would be responsible for disrupting certain bacteria in the intestine
Results of the study: among people consuming at least two cans of light drinks, the risk of diabetes is multiplied by 2.4, and even by 4.5 for those who drink more than five. In general, each dose of 20 centilitres of a light drink increases the risk of the pathology by 18%. This is a fairly small difference compared to non-lightened drinks, for which the risk is increased by 21%.
The reasons for this: according to the researchers, artificial sweeteners could disrupt the action of certain bacteria of the intestine, thus promoting the development of diabetes. The consumption of light drinks could also be the cause of a sensation of hunger, pushing people to turn to sugary foods.
