In Sweden, SMS is sent to blood donors as soon as their donation has saved a life

Medicine and technology have evolved over the years, but blood donation is essential to save many lives. Victims of accidents or illnesses that need blood products can hardly survive without the generosity of a donor.

As Sweden is also facing a decline in donors, the country has decided to encourage its citizens in a simple and effective way. When the donation is made, we send them a thank-you SMS and then, when the donated blood has been used to save a life, the donor is informed by SMS!

Thus, each donor becomes aware of the important citizen act that he has done by accepting that his blood flows in the veins of another person.

Karolina Blom Wiberg, head of communication for Stockholm’s blood transfusion service, told The Independent newspaper: “We are constantly trying to develop new ways of emphasizing the importance of donors.” We must admit that a simple SMS to inform us that our generosity has saved a life greatly changes our perception of blood donation.

Sweden wishes to value this civic gesture which seems innocuous but which is however so necessary. In France, the daily need is estimated at 8000 donations to help the victims.

A nice initiative that, in France, could perhaps increase the donation rate in France and save more people in need?

And you ? Would you like to receive an SMS when your blood donation saves someone?
