Here is why we must refuse Linky, the new “communicating” meter

The energy transition law published on 18 August 2015 introduces the deployment of 35 million new electricity meters known as “Linky”. All subscriptions under 36 kVa, residential and professional, are in the viewfinder. Thanks to the citizen mobilization, the sanctions initially planned in case of refusal (1 500 € fine) were removed from the text. Refusing the Linky meter at home is therefore possible, but we must act quickly because the installation of 500,000 “communicating” meters is scheduled for the end of 2015.

Brigitte J. is actively fighting against the “communicating” meter and she knows why: it is injecting CPL (Line Current) radiofrequencies into all cables and electrical devices. And the CPL, she has already experienced.

Insomniac since 2009, she suspected the wifi of neighbors to have made electrosensitive. Thinking of the harmless CPL, she offered to replace their wifi internet connection with CPL. They agreed to turn off the wifi and she provided them with the CPL box. She says, “I had a nightmarish night. I had serious heart irregularities, I feared a heart attack, I almost called the UAS. The next day she took over the CPL housing and her neighbors agreed to wire. Since then, she can finally sleep.

Brigitte is far from being alone in her case

Brigitte is one of the people we call “electrosensitive”. But do not think that electrosensitivity affects only a few isolated people, because each of us is electrosensitive, the only difference being that some suffer from more or less debilitating symptoms, and others do not.

The reason why the CPL has so quickly caused an acute crisis in this electrosensitive person is easy to understand: the CPL is radiofrequencies (between 63 and 95 megahertz for the Linky in CPL g3) which are injected into the circuits, cables and electrical devices of an entire house, or a whole building. This equipment is not designed for this purpose and is not shielded.

The radiofrequencies are therefore found in the surrounding air, measurable up to 2.50 meters from all the cables embedded in the walls, the exposed electrical wires and the devices themselves, including the bedside lamps , according to the association Next-up, who realized in 2014 a demonstrative film in a housing equipped with this type of meter.

The first to launch the alert were the radio amateurs, who described the CPL as “cancer of the waves” because of the intense interference they found on their transmitters / receivers. In 2009, one of them wrote to me: “This CPL box is connected to the sector and uses the electrical wired network of the house in which it emits a signal doubled by radio-frequency radiation. When a neighbor on the other side of the street uses it, in pavilion, I receive at home a powerful signal which completely saturates my receiver. “

Radiofrequencies are classified as carcinogenic, do not forget

Radio amateurs and electro-sensitive people, however, should not be the only ones strongly opposed to the deployment of Linky. It also threatens the 800,000 people who are currently fighting cancer. Indeed, since May 31, 2011, radio frequencies are officially recognized as “possibly carcinogenic” (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which depends on the WHO.

The radio frequencies and microwaves used by wireless technologies and connected objects are affected by the evaluation published two years later by IARC (Monograph # 102). They thus joined the extremely low frequency magnetic fields of electricity (50 hertz), which had already been classified in the same “potentially carcinogenic” category by IARC in 2001.

But the effects of radio frequencies are faster and more violent.

After the alert given in 2003 by the teachers of a Californian school equipped with smart meters, two American researchers, S. Milham and L. Morgan, published in August 2008, in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine a study highlighting a significant increase in the number of cancer pathologies among teachers in this institution. Of the 137 recruited between 1988 and 2005 at this school, 16 had cancer, two of which had double cancer in various locations, including: thyroid, uterus, malignant melanoma.

Cancer risk specifically correlated with radiofrequency exposure from smart meters was increased by 21% for a single year of presence, while exposure to low frequency magnetic fields, considered in isolation, was not affected.

All French are now concerned

The reality in France is that everyone is concerned by the Linky, even those who have chosen an alternative electricity supplier, because its management is provided by ERDF, a wholly owned subsidiary of EDF, which holds the monopoly distribution in France. Sleeping every night, living and working every day in a “potentially carcinogenic” wave bath can only threaten the health of the entire population.

A Canadian report based on a survey of 210 people in the United States, Canada and Australia (including 9 physicians) clearly establishes a direct and indisputable link between the installation of smart meters and the emergence of many electrosensitivity symptoms: sleep disturbances, headaches, difficulty concentrating, nausea, vertigo …

Shops, neighbors, businesses … we will swim in the “Linky world”

The next step is to take action. But it must be a collective action because, given the mode of propagation of radio frequencies, it will not be enough to refuse Linky home, it is also necessary to inform and convince his neighbors and his employer. And also warn the mayor, because it is the town, and not EDF / ERDF, which owns the electricity networks. As well as traders, craftsmen and small businesses, because by equipping, they will radiate without knowing all of their customers and even passers-by on the sidewalk!

Fire, copying, computer problems, unemployment … The linky is that too

Although this is not a health problem, it is also necessary to talk about the repeated failures observed on devices already in service and which will undoubtedly have destructive consequences on their professional equipment and their computer system.

In its new 2015 general conditions of sale, EDF / ERDF proves that it is aware of the problem by exonerating itself of any liability in case of breakdown and fire. The victims will only have 20 days from the incident to prove the contrary and quantify the amount of damages. And as insurance has excluded guarantees “all damage caused by electromagnetic fields”, it is the individuals and professionals themselves who will have to pay for repairs and losses of goods …

Regarding fires, the risk is major. During the experimentation of the Linky meters in France, 7 fires took place between August 31, 2010, date of its launch by a decree of the Prime Minister François Fillon, and December 1, 2010. The film of the Canadian Josh del Sol Take back your Power, visible on the internet, shows the same phenomenon in Quebec, where 9 million “smart meters” have been installed.

Another major risk is the blackout caused by a hacker or cyber-terrorist, to whom the Linky system makes France particularly vulnerable. In addition, widespread surveillance of the actions of the population is made possible by the real-time transmission of consumption data. This system consumes a lot of energy: each Linky meter constantly consumes 10 watts, and 700,000 concentrators (computers and 3G GPRS relay antennas at human height) will be installed in electrical transformer stations.

Finally, collateral damage of the Linky, the elimination of 10,000 jobs generated by the meter reading. These staff, who are not electricians will be trained quickly to install the meter “communicating”, which will ensure them a job … until 2022, according to the testimony of an employee of LS Services, subcontractor ERDF employs 500 people throughout France. The formations are already starting.

And in addition it will pay (expensive) all this

All for the tidy sum of 7 billion euros, the icing on the cake is that the life of equipment is only 10 years for concentrators and 15 years for meters, and the renewal of these material was not taken into account in the technical-financial analysis on which the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) relied to recommend the government to engage France in this hazardous site. In Quebec and Spain, since the installation of smart meters, all bills have increased, and there is no reason that it is not the same in France.

Bad faith arguments

Technology: one wonders why the CPL technology was chosen to make communicating meters “communicating”, while there is a fiber technology with none of the mentioned drawbacks.

Energy savings: By replacing 35 million electric meters by Linky, the goal announced by EDF, which is maneuvering through ERDF, is to be able to remotely extinguish electrical devices to smooth the “spikes” daily consumption and no longer have to import electricity when it is the most expensive or use its thermal power plants (oil, gas, coal). But to reduce consumption peaks, it is better to replace the electric heaters with other heating modes and reduce the power of the meter, which encourages the use of the devices alternately and not simultaneously.

Custom Invoices: Pro-Linky claims that the benefit to the consumer will be to get bills based on actual consumption and not on estimates. But this service (Statement Confidence at EDF or Ma Relève at Engie) is already available and everyone can submit their consumption index a few days before the establishment of each invoice.

Their response to the protests: let us hasten to do nothing

All the specialized associations, Next-up and Robin des Toits in the lead, are mobilized against Linky. The Director General of Health, Professor Benoît Vallet, announced the referral to the French Agency for Food Safety, Environment and Labor (ANSES) to assess “the level of exposure of the population especially in living quarters and near meters (…), and make proposals for research and monitoring to be put in place. In other words, the authorities will watch the Linky by the small end of the telescope. This will allow them to see nothing.

Several petitions are currently being launched to avoid the deployment of “communicating” meters. But since the expenses have already been incurred, it is unlikely that the installation program will be postponed. To protect your immediate environment, all you have to do is convince your neighbors or co-owners of your building to oppose Linky.
