One day, his barking and his activity annoyed the headmaster of the Luhlaza Khayelitsha College. Manono Makhaphela then decreed that Lily’s barking was noise pollution, and he ordered the two school janitors to get rid of her by burying him alive!

Horrified, the school cooks could only watch this terrible spectacle, while Lily struggled in vain. Panicked, a housekeeper from the school then called the Mdzananda Veterinary Clinic from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

When the clinic staff arrived, Lily was buried in a 1-meter-deep hole. She had only a few minutes left to live, since she had been buried for more than twenty minutes.

Rescuers found that her partial paralysis was the result of a fractured spine when she was younger.

She has since been followed by hydrotherapy and other treatments such as acupuncture, to give her some mobility in her paws, and to cure her incontinence.

Gradually, she regained weight and muscles. She received a lot of support. IFAW has sent pieces of cloth to its donors around the world, inviting them to write a message for Lily.

Yet, contrary to the wishes of the Mdzananda Veterinary Clinic, justice has not been fully rendered in the Lily case. It has been more than four years since Lily was removed from her grave, and the main culprit in this situation has not yet served her sentence.

Although both caretakers were charged and charged with animal cruelty, the school principal refused to incorporate a wildlife protection program into his students’ curriculum.

Frustrated by the lack of punishment in her case, the clinic had her arrested and imprisoned. If he wants his record to be redacted from this sentence, the headmaster now has until July 18, 2015 to set up an education and awareness program.

Years after the incident, Lily continues to be a source of inspiration for animal rights advocates. And her metamorphosis educated many people, including those who had mistreated her. One of the caretakers regrets his action so much that he now works as a volunteer at the clinic!
