The study to show a lasting reduction in blood pressure from dietary nitrate

The benefits of beetroot for high blood pressure are due to its high nitrate content. These nitrates would improve the passage of oxygen in parts of the body (including the brain) that are lacking and help to reduce the blood pressure in circulation.

Published in the journal of the American Heart Association Hypertension, the study was conducted on 8 women and 7 men with hypertension taking no drugs.

They had to drink 250ml of beet juice or water containing a small amount of nitrates. Their tension was monitored over 24 hours. On arrival, participants taking beetroot saw their systolic pressure * decrease by 10 mmHg compared with those who drink water.

The effect was most pronounced within 3 to 6 hours of intake but remained constant over 24 hours. Beet juice can be found in supermarkets and organic stores.

The study concludes:

“These findings suggest a role for dietary nitrate as a readily available, affordable adjunctive therapy in the treatment of patients with hypertension. “
