I wish I had this T-shirt when I was in Afghanistan. In 2009, we were located in a small observation post, somewhere in Kandahar province for a week, only with rations to fill our belly. After several days and many elaborate drawings, I finally managed to communicate to a soldier of the local Afghan National Army that we were interested in real food. For the rest of our stay, and for only a few dollars, we were treated to hot meals twice a day. But if I had this IconSpeak shirt, we could have avoided the cold rations.
IconSpeak is a useful printed T-shirt with 40 universal icons, perfect for occasions when you do not speak the local language and if you have forgotten how to say “I think there is a problem with my carburetor. The t-shirt was thought by 3 Swiss around some refreshing drinks and following a motorcycle adventure that broke down somewhere in Vietnam.
“Many times we have been confronted with the language barrier that was only solved by drawing signs, symbols or icons on a piece of paper, a map or in the ground,” explain George, Steven, and Florian. We thought it would be good to have an essential set of icons with us, all the time, so that we could just point out everything you need – and people understand. Soon we began to list more or less essential icons that would have been a great help for our trip, but also for anyone.
