41% of vegetables and 70% of fruits are contaminated with pesticides

This report is based on the official figures of the General Directorate for the Repression of Fraud ( DGCCRF ). The analysis report makes it possible to have a ranking of fruits and vegetables and the rate of pesticide residues in the latter over a period from 2012 to 2016. 19 fruits and 33 vegetables consumed in France were studied. gives a sample of 11,103 products.

“The DGCCRF only talks about averages per family of fruits and vegetables, results that are not always representative or regular because all foods are not monitored every year or too few,” says François Veillerette, the President of Future Generations.

“We have chosen to aggregate data over five years, food by food, to have a larger staff size and smooth the vagaries for example climatic. “

This list is “an unpublished compilation work in France . There was a demand from consumers : lack of data for France, they turned to North American studies while the active substances authorized are not the same nor the methods of production, “says François Veillerette . The data shows that 70% of the fruits analyzed contain pesticide residues, while for vegetables, the percentage is 41%.

EAT 5 FRUITS AND VEGETABLES A DAY … AND SEVERAL RESIDUES OF PESTICIDES

It is the grape that is at the top of the ranking of the fruit that most often contains pesticides with a rate of 89% of contaminated products. For vegetables, it is the celery-branch that wins the gold award: 84.6% of the samples are contaminated with pesticide residues.

“In general, this ranking shows that the presence of pesticides is still a real problem in food. It will enable consumers to be better informed, “explains François Veillerette ,.

WHAT EFFECTS ON OUR HEALTH?

The NGO warns in the report that some foods do not contain a single pesticide but several. This is the case for 40% of the fruits and vegetables studied: they contain more than two pesticides. The National Food Safety Agency (ANSES) calls this “the cocktail effect”. Thus, these foods are even more toxic.

Jean-Pierre Cravedi, toxicologist and director of research at the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRA), interviewed by Le Monde , said that we should not be alarmed:

“The presence of pesticide residues is not a concern in itself for health since they are regulated.” In fact, the report reveals a presence of pesticides, but does not give the pesticide concentration levels for the foods analyzed.

The toxicologist adds “there is a risk of regular or routine consumption of a fruit or vegetable that exceeds the maximum residue limit for the same pesticide, which is unlikely. “
